When they aren’t running the basepaths, the Barry
University Baseball team is busy supporting runners
in the community.
The team volunteered for three separate fund-rais-
ing races to benefit local charities. The team volun-
teered a total of 525 hours for the 5K Walk/Run for
HAITI at Zoo Miami, The Pretty Muddy Run, and
the St. Jude Latin Music Half Marathon .
The 5k Walk/Run for HAITI benefits the organi-
zation Hand in Hand for Haiti which is a collective
response to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti following
the catastrophic earthquake that hit the country on
January 12, 2010. The project, which has generated
extraordinary support, has built a world-class educa-
tional facility in an area of great need. The school,
Lycée Jean-Baptiste Pointe du Sable, opened on
October 3, 2011.
The Pretty Muddy Run is a 5k, adventurous, ob-
stacle course mud run for women who want to take
on the challenge of an outdoor terrain.
The St. Jude Latin Music Half Marathon is a race
that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
and their work to help children battling cancer.
This Fall, student-athletes and coaches from the
Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams conducted a
coaching clinic at Edison Middle School. Barry’s coach-
es spoke with the students and stressed the importance
of academics and positive role models. The students
participated in on-court drills led by the Barry coaching
staff. The clinic was such a positive experience at Edison
the program may become an annual event.
Coach Bill Sullivan and Coach Ryan Saunders invited
the students to be guests at some of the home games
this season at Barry. Sullivan commented on the team’s
“The coaches and our players had a great time con-
ducting the basketball clinic at Miami Edison Middle
School. The students were very receptive and seemed
to really appreciate our players working on basketball
fundamentals with them. We believe it is very important
for our student-athletes to give back to our community.
We are proud of our players’ willingness to help young
people in our area.”
